Cult Epics and AgitPop present Population: 1

Punk entrepreneur Malcolm McLaren approaches Hollywood B-movie director Russ Meyer to make a feature film starring the Sex Pistols. Russ, who has helped Dutch director Rene Daalder to make his first American movie, Massacre At Central High, asks his friend from Holland to help navigate the uncharted punk terrain. A few months later Daalder’s house in LA becomes the headquarters of the Sex Pistols USA.

(See a picture gallery on the bottom of this page)

McLaren and Daalder begin to work on a reality-based project called Will Success Spoil Johnny Rotten? while film critic Roger Ebert is brought in to write a sequel to Russ’ camp classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, starring the Pistols.

A major culture clash is inevitable. “Now listen to me, you punks, we saved your ass in World War II!” Russ yells on the eve of the project’s collapse. Soon after the band falls apart during its final gig in San Francisco’s historic hippie venue Winterland.

From the ashes of this flame-out arises The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, which was concocted by committee, including Daalder, compiling some sort of narrative from the debris of archival footage, video vignettes, and a few campy scenes, starring McLaren along with the band, minus Rotten.

CUT TO 1978: Fayette Hauser, a member of gender-bending camp group the Cockettes, introduces Daalder to former Cockette Tomata du Plenty, now the nonpareil front man of LA’s hot techno-punk band The Screamers.

IN 1979 Daalder and The Screamers team up to do live shows at the Whisky and Roxy in LA as well as halls in San Francisco and New York. The live performances are augmented by female punk singer Sheela Edwards and the frantic accompaniment of a string section underscoring the highly theatrical stage show, which draws capacity crowds every night.

After less than two years on the scene and establishing themselves as one of the most exciting and influential LA bands of the period, The Screamers are ready to branch out into video. MTV is still two years away and the few music-video style films in existence are feature length compilations, often consisting of concert footage and musical vignettes mixed in with some newly shot material.

One early example is Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels, followed by his ill-fated Baby Snakes a decade later. Occasionally, other musician-made films pop up, like maverick record producer Todd Rundgren’s video feature based on Gustav Holst’s The Planets and ex-Monkee Michael Nesmith’s Elephant Parts.

From the beginning musicians are very much attracted to the video medium, which is much more malleable than celluloid and provides an audio-visual equivalent to the complexity of their music. Chroma-key composites in particular give the image a layered look similar to the multi-channel mixes achieved by the 24-track audio recorders that revolutionized music.

In due time, Daalder and the Screamers establish themselves among the early video pioneers, shooting their first production in a former vitamin-bottling factory on Melrose Ave. they turned into a multi-media facility called Rhapsody Studios. Their movie is to be titled Mensch, and will be starring Tomata du Plenty in a post-apocalyptic story set in a disco resembling the German expressionist style of the silent movie The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Many denizens of the LA punk scene flock to the studio where they are drawn into elaborate choreographies and musical performances, some of them featuring the Avengers’ Penelope Houston, musicians from The Blasters, Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs, and many others.

About 1/3rd into the film’s production the financier pulls the plug on Mensch, ultimately leaving Rhapsody Studios in a shambles.

All is not well with Tomata either, as he has been struggling to keep up the pace. Shortly after, he is diagnosed as HIV positive.

Thus the time has come to pick up the pieces of yet another amazing musical adventure that seems to have fallen apart. Digging into boxes full of scenes from an unfinished movie, video clips, music and performance footage, Tomata and Daalder unearth a treasure trove of materials waiting for a proper context to be shared with the world.

In the best tradition of full length musical compilations, a framework is created wherein Tomata becomes the sole survivor of a disaster that has wiped out America. Hidden in a bomb shelter below the devastation, Tomata’s character decides to piece together a revisionist history of the United States. Using whatever memorabilia he can get his hands on, he recounts his own warped memoirs as the last citizen of what once was the greatest country on Earth.

Without a budget, nor the studio where it all began, the crew soon moves into Tomata’s small apartment just off of Hollywood Boulevard and turns the place into a bona fide bomb shelter. There, surrounded by set pieces, the former Screamers star resides for one full year waiting for the crew to stop by on weekends to film the next installment of his twisted memoirs.

On and off over a year-long period the film is edited at Todd Rundgren’s groundbreaking Utopia Video studio in Bearsville, NY, experimenting with chroma-key techniques and video synthesis. Employing the best analog technology of the time, the filmmakers effectively contribute to what would later become the prevailing audio-visual vocabulary on MTV.

The premiere of Population: 1 took place on January 29, 1986 at the Four Star Theater in Los Angeles where one reviewer called it: "A no-holds-barred assault. As if Frank Zappa and Hieronymus Bosch took angel dust together and created a nightmare." It was screened at several festivals all over the world, broadcast in Holland and released in Japan.

Now, making use of today’s digital post-production techniques, a brand new director’s cut is finally finding its way onto DVD, surrounded by a wealth of interviews, mini-documentaries, performance footage and additional video clips of the Screamers and The Avengers’ Penelope Houston. Since the year 2000 Tomata is no longer with us, but his lone voice remains and continues to create a stir.
